I'm considering a new Superocean Heritage 46 and am concerned that the anti-glare coating which is applied to both sides of crystal will scratch (this is apparently a significant problem for example with Omega Seamaster Ocean Planet). It's almost impossible in normal life to scratch a sapphire crystal, though they can be chipped around the edge. However it is very easy to scratch anti-reflective coating. Some people choose to polish it off & it can be reapplied if so wished. The anti reflective coating is a little more susceptible to scratching, but still not common.

If the goal is to only remove the AR coating, then I would suggest avoiding diamond paste, which can reshape the sapphire crystal as well. Some people have suggested polywatch together with a low speed Dremel. Typically, watches made with sapphire crystal are billed as being "deep scratch resistant" due to the tenacity of the crystallized glass. However, this does not mean that sapphire crystal is scratch-proof. For watch lovers, a fresh scratch on an otherwise flawless crystal is a devastating sight.
