In 2008, Rolex introduced a brand new generation of Submariner (the 6-digit gen), for the first time equipped with a ceramic bezel insert (so-called Cerachrom), all featuring the Maxi Dial concept of the Kermit (large markers/hands). First presented in gold and Rolesor, in 2010 Rolex introduced the 116610LN and 116610LV, respectively the date . On top of the case sits a unidirectional 120-click bezel with a Cerachrom ceramic elapsed time insert. The engraved numerals are coated with a thin layer of PVD platinum for a silvery white coloration with little to no shine.
From bidirectional aluminum bezels to unidirectional aluminum bezels to today’s high-tech Cerachrom bezel, the Rolex Submariner bezel has evolved significantly and steadily over the years. However, what has remained the same is the importance of the bezel – both to the overall look and functionality of the iconic Rolex Submariner. The 116610LN was introduced in 2010, and was only recently discontinued and replaced by the newer, 41mm 126610LN in 2021. One key change from its predecessor is the new ceramic bezel with platinum inserts (which Rolex labels as “Cerachrom”).
The rotating bezel on the Submariner used to have an aluminum insert with the minute indicators printed on it, but a few years ago Rolex moved over to making ceramic bezels. This was a distinct upgrade and Rolex calls their ceramic “Cerachrom.” The smooth black ceramic timing bezel is useful in so many circumstances, the simple dial layout with Maxi markers (giving a nod to Maxi dial subs of the past) and glide lock clasp make this a perfect watch for me.
